We finally took the 30 minute train ride all the way into Lisbon. After a stop in Belem, and a snack of the famous Pasteis de Belem, we visited a few sites then continued into the center of Lisbon.

The Mosteiro do Jeronimos - this cathedral was built in part to honor Vasco da Gama who set sail from Belem, an area of Lisbon. The style of the cathedral was influenced by the goods and animals the Portuguese was in India. It is the first time I've seen elephant statues in a Catholic church!

The Padrao dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Discoveries) was built in 1960. Henry the Navigator stands at the front, but he is backed up by many important people. . . including a queen, painter, and writer!

We had dinner in the Bairro Alto, David had the very authentic meal of whole (guts, heads, and all) grilled sardines!
Looks like a beautiful & fun country - and Erika fits nicely with a limo! If Matt & I don't get to come visit - perhaps we'll still be here in Portland when you return! Good luck running on cobblestones Erika and David have fun surfing/biking! :)
ReplyDeleteWow Lisbon looks cool! Thanks for the updates. I love seeing what's up.
ReplyDeleteI JUST saw this post--I subscribed but it didn't notify me. Don't know how subscribing works.
Have a good week!
This looks awesome! You guys have a great time and be safe! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a bunch of heathens! Don't they know how to fillet a fish? You could revolutionize that place.
ReplyDeletewhen I was in portugal I noticed that a lot of the churches had weird, creepy, wooden mannequin-like saints (as pictured in 9th from the bottom). you know, as opposed to slightly less creepy stone or plaster statues. every time I see creepy saint stuff, I of course think of you ericka, and our relics class. also, I hope you don't get too fat eating those delicious custard tarts. I would.
